Botox as a Treatment for Overactive Bladder
Wednesday, April 4th, 2012We are all familiar with the use of botox for cosmetic procedures, but recent developments in the pharmaceutical world suggest that it could now also be used to treat an overactive bladder. Allergan, a global pharmaceutical company have recently filed applications with U.S and European regulators to sell Botox as an effective treatment for overactive bladder, something which effects around one in six people.
New research has shown that the injectable neurotoxin most commonly used for fighting wrinkles, significantly reduced bladder leakage when compared to a placebo. Botox is already in use for people with neurologically related bladder problems like Multiple Sclerosis, but is not yet in circulation for idiopathic bladder – the causes of which are still unclear but is rather more common.
The trials, which took place in the U.S, selected patients at random, injecting botox into some, where others were given a placebo. Results showed that there was a noticeable decrease in incontinence from those injected with the botox, sparking positive reactions from the medical community.
Although some side effects have been reported, they largely confined to minor urinary tract infections which can be easily treated and Allergan have been positive that the patients who has received botox had an almost immediate and fairly dramatic increase in their quality of life, regaining confidence and being able to become more active than they had been previously.
Commenting on the developments, Allergan confirmed that Botox met the endpoints of their clinical trials and found that patients who didn’t respond well to oral medications reacted well to the new treatment. They are now applying for a supplemental biologics license application with regulatory authorities.
Further details of the trials are expected to be released within the next few weeks but these early findings are exciting news for the medical and cosmetic industry. Jane Reynolds, a provider of botox in Newport commented today, “This is a great advancement for the entire industry, it is fantastic to see existing products being developed like this”
